The fall racing season is an exciting time for runners but if you’ve been training hard for a race, it can be tough to regain your motivation and excitement for the sport. In a phenomenon known as the post-race blues, runners can often find themselves feeling lost or even depressed in the days and weeks after racing.

In today’s show, we’re shedding some light on this condition that affects runners of all levels from amateurs to trained elites. Runners spend long blocks of time preparing for races, commonly 12-16 weeks if you’re training for a marathon. The build-up can create a lot of excitement that is suddenly missing afterward so it’s no wonder the post-race blues cause some pretty strong emotions. You’ll come away from this discussion learning all about what it is and how to cope if you or a fellow runner find yourself suffering from the post-race blues including topics such as:

  • What are the signs and symptoms of the post-race blues?
  • Strategies for managing these symptoms and rekindling your racing excitement
  • How to tell whether you need a break after racing and when to jump back into training
  • And we’ll talk about how you can make the most of the period between training blocks

RC tips for overcoming the post-run blues: 7 Ways to Overcome the Runner Blues When You Are Struggling - Runners Connect

Runners can get pretty competitive when it comes to race day, so it’s no surprise that many runners also tend to have strong opinions about what helps to race faster. Today’s show is bringing back a familiar format with another edition of underrated or overrated; this time focusing on racing topics.

If you’re new to this format, our panel will be given a series of popular topics and tell you why they think each one is either overhyped or why you should be focusing on it if your goal is to progress as a runner.

Today’s Underrated or Overrated episode continues with the September focus on racing, covering why many popular racing topics are either underrated or overrated.

We’ll be going over popular racing-themed running topics ranging from gear to beer, so keep listening to learn more.

Just to give you a taste of what’s to come, a few topics we’ll cover include:

  • Do you need a high-tech GPS watch to race well?
  • Is a negative split the best racing strategy?
  • Is there any better way to celebrate finishing a race than with the post-race beer
  • And tons more fun and informative topics!

There’s always a lot of interesting research being done in the field of exercise physiology.

Here to translate some of the takeaways from the latest research specifically around energy expenditure and fueling strategies for endurance athletes is Patrick Davitt, a Professor of Exercise Physiology at Saint Joseph’s University who specializes in energy metabolism and fitness testing with various populations, from sedentary individuals to elite professional athletes.

Specifically, we discuss:

  • what it means to be metabolically flexible and the benefits of this flexibility in a running context
  • takeaways from research on the low-carb/ketogenic dieting process for various types of runners
  • fueling with different carbohydrate beverages
  • the impact of pack weight and fatigue on energy expenditure and perception of effort/cognition in endurance athletes in running and hiking settings
  • the metabolic and physiological impacts of varied macronutrient combinations,

Not only is Professor Davitt passionate about his research, but he’s also an avid runner himself having most recently completed the Eastern States 100 Miler in 2021 and brings a lot of excitement about the community to this conversation as well. Let’s get into it!

While we all start each training cycle rearing to go and extremely motivated for whatever training and life throws our way, the reality is we will all go through periods during training where we’re just not motivated.

As an example, I know with some of the record heat this summer, it’s just plain exhausting to always be battling even when you get your runs in before the sun is up.

There's no shortage of reasons we go through stints in our training when we just don’t feel motivated to get out the door.

So, on today’s show we’re talking with author Mackenzie Havey. Mackenzie published an awesome book called “Mindful Running” so today we’re going to learn from her…

  • How to overcome lack of motivation
  • Tips and tactics to relieve anxiety about performance
  • And the best ways to dispel negative thinking during training and racing

We’re going to get in-depth about all these issues and the simple things you can implement in your daily training to conquer them.

This is really a unique inside look at our retreats and while I know most of you won’t be able to attend one of our retreats, we’re still eager to help you learn and get value from everything we do.

If you’re looking for a better energy gel that contains no sugar and instead uses a revolutionary slow burning carbohydrate called LIVESTEADY, then you should check out UCAN.

All this data means using UCAN can help you avoid hitting the dreaded wall during the half, full and ultra marathon distance.

If you’ve been a RunnersConnect fan for long enough, you know one of the main principles we believe in when it comes to marathon training is improving your body’s ability to burn fat as a fuel source while running, especially while at marathon pace.

So, how exactly do we do this and what does some of the latest research say?

The research in question revolves around the two concepts of Nutrition Periodization and Metabolic Efficiency Training. Together they increase the body's ability to use fat as fuel during exercise and thus optimize both body composition and performance.

Joining us in this episode is Bob Seebohar, the creator of these two concepts. He’s going to help you learn…

  • What these two concepts are and why they are so critical to your running performance.
  • How to utilize them during your training and taper
  • And how tweak these concepts to improve body composition, and reduce GI issues

If you’re racing a fall half or full, this is a must listen!

We all know that injuries are the biggest impediment to our continued progression and improvement. The longer you can get in uninterrupted training, the more consistently you’ll improve.

That said, there’s a lot we can do (or at least should be doing) to modify our training to reduce the risk of injury.

To help us dig deep into exactly what these elements are, we’re interviewing Ethan Paster.

Ethan is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has extensive experience working with runners one-on-one to keep them healthy and build back safely from existing injuries.

We’re going to cover…

  • When it’s okay to run through and injury and when it’s not (and how to go about it safely)
  • The most important modifications you can make to your training to decrease injury risk
  • How to deal with pain management when returning from an injury
  • And much more.

This is a great interview for any new runner, but also a great reminder for experienced runners as well.

  • The nutrition tweak that has the biggest impact on performance

Magnesium Breakthrough from Bioptimizers.

Supplementing with magnesium before you go to bed has been shown in scientific studies to…

  • Increase in muscle oxygenation during high intensity exercise
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Significantly improve sleep quality
  • Improve aerobic exercise capacity when training.

When you’re looking for a magnesium supplement, make sure you take one that is organic and has all 7 unique forms of magnesium.

Our recommendation is Magnesium Breakthrough from Bioptimizers because it’s made with the highest quality, organic magnesium and contains all 7 critical forms. Most other magnesium supplements are synthetic and only contain one or two forms of magnesium, which is simply not enough.

How to handle training and racing in heat and humidity!

Something a lot of our athletes are talking about now, is the role heat and humidity plays in training and racing. As great as it would be to not see any effect, we know we need to adjust in order to stay on track.

Our athletes have the ability to click a button in their schedule to automatically adjust their paces based on the dew point and temperature. Yet, it can still sometimes take some convincing that it is alright to be a little slower during this time.

On this week’s Podcast we cover:

  • How our athletes adjust their training and how you can use our temperature adjustment calculator
  • A comparison of how much you need to adjust based on different weather conditions
  • The hydration and heat acclimation strategies our athletes are using
  • How dehydration affects performance and tips for staying hydrated
  • And, is heat and humidity training really the poor man's altitude?

Master training in the summer, and we can really see the benefits pay off in the fall. Tune in and start maximizing your performance in any weather!

Racing in hot weather? Use our exclusive Temperature Calculator on your workout and race days to adjust your goal pace according to the weather outlook!
