Have you hit a plateau in your running? Despite doing all the right things, or most of the right things that you are supposed to be doing, you just seem stuck.

Maybe it’s because you're getting older and you think your better days are behind you. Maybe you need a new workout plan, a new coach, new shoes, or a new supplement to get you to the next level.

Or perhaps you’re just not finding the joy in your running like you used to.

Elisabeth Scott is here to help you change that.

On today’s Run to the Top Podcast, Coach Claire brought back the head coach and founder of Running Explained to help you finally break through to the next level in your running.

You’ll learn:

  • What you might be missing out on even if you think you’re getting your training right
  • Which aspects of your schedule might need to change and,
  • Why consistency and patience are so important in not only your growth but determining if you are even in a plateau in the first place.

Elisabeth is uniquely talented at making running concepts clear and accessible to everyone at every level and I’m delighted to have her back on the show.

If you are feeling like you are running in circles with your running, this one's for you.

All runners are not the same. Distance runners and sprinters really seem to be engaging in an entirely different sport. Tiny and lean elite marathoners are a stark contrast to muscular, powerful sprinters. Training for these events is vastly different and what it takes to be successful for a 100m sprinter is quite different than that for a marathoner.

Or is it?

Certainly it’s easy to find the differences, but I would argue that there’s a significant overlap both in the physical training philosophy, but the mental aspect as well. Most runners listening to this show are clearly on the endurance side, but there is a lot to be learned from the sprint side as well.

On today’s Run to the Top Podcast, I’ve invited on the creator of Sprint Science, Kieran Gillespie. Kieran is an England Athletics coach, with a degree in both mathematics and physical education. You can find him sharing his sprint training knowledge on his wildly popular Sprint Science Instagram account and that’s where I got hooked on his training advice.

On this episode, you’ll learn:

  • what it takes to train to be an excellent sprinter
  • how endurance runners can benefit from sprint training, and
  • the biomechanics of truly fast speed

And if you’ve ever wondered what on earth the fastest people on the planet are thinking about for a 10-20 second race, we’ll talk about that as well.

As good as running is for our bodies, it’s probably equally good, if not even more so, for our brains. The mental health benefits of aerobic exercise have been proven over and over again in scientific studies.

On today’s Run to the Top Podcast, we explore the topic of running as a meditation practice with author and runner Nita Sweeney. You might remember her from being on the show a couple of years ago. Nita’s back with a new book out called Make Every Move a Meditation: Mindful Movement for Mental Health, Well-Being, and Insight.

We talk about:

  • why you might want to incorporate meditation into your running
  • what the benefits are, and
  • exactly how to start doing it on your run right now.

And don’t worry for all of you out there who bristle with anything too new agey or woowoo. You’ll learn how you can actually use some of these techniques to improve your performance, not just your mental health.

Magnesium Breakthrough from Bioptimizers.

Supplementing with magnesium before you go to bed has been shown in scientific studies to…

  • Increase in muscle oxygenation during high intensity exercise
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Significantly improve sleep quality
  • Improve aerobic exercise capacity when training.

When you’re looking for a magnesium supplement, make sure you take one that is organic and has all 7 unique forms of magnesium.

Our recommendation is Magnesium Breakthrough from Bioptimizers because it’s made with the highest quality, organic magnesium and contains all 7 critical forms. Most other magnesium supplements are synthetic and only contain one or two forms of magnesium, which is simply not enough.

Running is a massive participation sport. About 50 million Americans (or 15 percent of the U.S. population) participate in some form of running, according to a 2020 report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

Yet very few elite runners are true household names these days. Sure, there might be some stories that capture the world’s attention, usually around the Olympic Games, but overall there is a disconnect between running for yourself and being a true fan of the sport.

Our guest on today’s episode of the Run to the Top Podcast is out to change that. Chris Chavez is a writer for Sports Illustrated and is the founder of Citius Mag, a track and field media triumvirate of podcast, blog, and YouTube channel.

Chris’s mission with Citius Mag is to share and grow the passion for track and field into a thriving community. What’s even more interesting is that Citius Mag has grown from a way for Chris to report more on the sport, to becoming one of the leading media players in track and field. And he’s not even 30.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • why track and field is such a great spectator sport and why it falls short creating fans
  • how better storytelling and new ways to reach audiences is changing that, and
  • Coach Claire also asks him about his viral stunt last year racing Malcolm Gladwell, another literary track and field nerd, in the mile.

This was such a fun conversation and if you are not already a fan of track and field, this just might change your mind.

BIO Pro +

As we get older our body slowly stops producing the natural hormones, HGH, responsible for muscle repair, growth and recovery. BioPro+ is a non-synthetic alternative to prescription HGH growth hormone treatments. It’s a natural way to replace the growth hormones you lose as you age. There’s no injecting, no prescriptions, and it’s all natural.

What if I told you that there is something out there that can help you build lean muscle, boost endurance, reduce fatigue, help you perform better, help slow down the aging process, with virtually no downsides? Not only that, it’s something that is super cheap, safe, and has been rigorously studied for decades.

You’d probably say it’s too good to be true.

Well, it actually is true. It’s creatine. Yes, the supplement that bodybuilders have been taking forever to bulk up can also be incredibly beneficial to endurance athletes as well.

Now, you might be wondering how this can possibly be true. After all, most endurance athletes don’t want to grow Arnold Schwartzenegger muscles and tend not to have much in common with the gym bros trying to bulk up. But mention boosted endurance and reduction in soreness? Now we’re getting excited.

Coach Claire dives down the creatine rabbit hole with registered sports dietician Kelly Jones.

In this episode of the Run to the Top, you’ll learn:

  • what the benefits of creatine are for endurance athletes, and how to use it
  • what the myths and potential downsides are to creatine
  • and we’ll go over protein for runners in general from essential amino acids, branched chain amino acids, and more

If you’ve ever wondered if there was a cheap, safe, and effective way to boost your performance, this is the episode for you.
